According to Bloomberg, TSMC has started construction of its first wafer fab in Dresden, Germany, and plans to build more factories in Europe in the future, targeting different market sectors with a focus on the AI chip market to further expand its global business footprint.
TSMC stated in a statement that it is currently focused on its ongoing global expansion projects and has no new investment plans at the moment.
In August of this year, TSMC launched a 10 billion euro (approximately 77.344 billion yuan) chip manufacturing plant construction project in Dresden, Germany, which is its first factory in the European Union. About half of the project funds will be subsidized by the local government, and it is planned to start production by the end of 2027.
According to reports, the AI market (such as Nvidia and AMD related chips) will become the most important growth area, and other semiconductor companies with unique designs may also bring new opportunities for TSMC. According to local officials in Taiwan, TSMC may prepare more factories for the European market, and the company is planning for several future factories. “TSMC still needs to evaluate whether to continue expanding in Dresden or build factories in other parts of the European Union.”
