According to local Portuguese media reports on the 27th, the 5G network and related services will drive Portugal’s GDP growth and bring about 130,000 jobs. If China’s Huawei is excluded from the 5G network construction, it may cause an economic loss of 1.1 billion euros by 2023.

Portuguese financial media Dinheiro Vivo reported that if Huawei is excluded from 5G network construction, the related gap may cause 1 million to 1.4 million Portuguese to be unable to use 5G networks by 2023.

It’s reported that the Portuguese government has established a special working group to conduct research on the security of Huawei’s 5G equipment. At present, the government is still waiting for the research results of the working group and has not yet made any decision on whether to exclude Huawei from 5G network construction.

According to reports, the State Secretary in charge of communications, Alberto Sotu de Miranda, stated in Parliament that the research work of the working group has been basically completed. He hoped that the conclusion of the working group would be supported by the government.

The Portuguese government has stated many times before that any company will not be excluded from the construction of 5G networks, and the market will decide on its own in accordance with EU rules and market rules.

Besides, according to Singapore media reports, in response to the Trump administration’s continued pressure on countries willing to adopt Huawei’s 5G network equipment, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who has just been re-elected as Prime Minister of Singapore, responded that no system is absolutely secure, so the key lies in “how to balance the system’s risks and uses”.

Lee Hsien Loong pointed out in an online forum organized by the “Atlantic Council” that no matter whether it is buying any system for 3G, 4G or 5G networks, everyone will want to try to join the transaction, but from manufacturers to other interested participants, it is impossible to provide a 100% secure system.

He said: “Therefore, the key point is how to strike a balance between the risk and the ultimate role (the system), and how to minimize the risk, without everything to be done by yourself.”

He also pointed out that the Singapore government did not exclude Huawei as a supplier when soliciting 5G network proposals. Although Singaporean telecommunication operators did not choose to cooperate with Huawei to build a local 5G network, Huawei still participated in the construction of other aspects of the 5G network.

“In the future development of Singapore’s 5G network, Huawei will undoubtedly participate again.” Lee Hsien Loong said.
