On Monday, Canadian operator Rogers Communications announced that it has obtained Canada’s first 5G independent equipment certification and launched Canada’s first national independent 5G core network.

Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro will be the first 5G independent smartphone devices certified by Canada. In the next few months, eligible customers will automatically connect to the already launched 5G standalone network. Rogers has completed the deployment of 5G independent core networks across the country, and is deploying its 5G independent services to cover major markets including Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

The completion of these key milestones represents an important step towards the development of 5G connectivity. Combining network slicing and mobile edge computing, it will unleash the power of 5G independent services, ultra-low latency data transmission and higher data rates. These features will open up a world full of possibilities and next-generation innovations, from true self-driving cars to early enhanced earthquake warning systems and more.

Yasir Hussain, Chief Technology Officer of Ericsson Canada, said: “The transition to 5G independent network services opens up critical end-to-end network connectivity and is an important step in creating new opportunities for industries, businesses and consumers. Rogers and Ericsson’s long-term partner The relationship continues to bring innovation to the growing needs of businesses and consumers, and we look forward to working with Rogers to bring more technological advancements to all Canadians.”
