Foreign media POLITICO announced on the 4th of this month that according to an official statement received from Intel, the tech giant has shelved its chip investment plans in France and Italy.

This statement also confirms the views of Italian Minister of Industry Adolf Urso in March of this year.

Intel announced in its European investment plan for 2022 that it will open an HPC&AI R&D and design center in France, which will provide 1000 new job opportunities; And plans to build a world leading advanced packaging capacity in Italy.

However, Intel stated in a statement shared with foreign media that due to significant changes in economic and market conditions since 2022, Intel has suspended its investments in France.

Intel is adjusting the scope of its R&D center construction plan, and France remains Intel’s choice for future R&D centers.

When asked about the status of advanced packaging factories in Italy, Intel stated that it is “focusing on its active manufacturing projects in Ireland, Germany, and Poland”.

Intel will expand its existing wafer fabs in Ireland, build advanced foundry capacity in Germany, and construct advanced packaging and testing facilities in Poland that are compatible with German production capacity.

Intel’s investment plan in Italy was closely related to the acquisition of Tower Semiconductor, but the deal ultimately fell through due to antitrust regulatory factors.

According to foreign media reports, after facing a series of unfavorable factors, the production of Intel’s Magdeburg wafer fab in Germany “will not start until the end of 2028 at the earliest”.
