JT’s multi million pound investment in next-generation mobile networks, supported by Ericsson, has entered its final stage, with the first batch of sites successfully launched on the brand new 5G network over the weekend. This is not only a crucial initiative for the Channel Islands region, but also puts it in a leading position in Europe, becoming a true pioneer.

The event was grandly held at JT’s Network Operations Center. At that time, JT engineers collaborated with Ericsson’s global network operations center through real-time links. After months of experimentation and rigorous optimization testing, they successfully migrated the old network to the site in St Ouen district and smoothly transitioned to the newly constructed network. Based on early testing predictions, both signal strength and coverage have significantly improved. Compared to previous connections, the average download speed on the new network has achieved a further significant increase.

This marks the beginning of a new era for Jersey, making it a true hub for innovation in numerous industries. Two years ago, JT partnered with Ericsson to upgrade JT’s highly acclaimed network with a comprehensive end-to-end 5G solution.

The launch process of the new network will take several months, and each “region” will be gradually launched in stages. The complete 5G standalone (SA) experience can only be provided after all stages are completed, and is expected to be achieved by the end of 2025.

The 5G SA technology is more advanced compared to the non standalone (NSA) 5G technology adopted by most operators. Ericsson supports 183 5G networks in 77 countries worldwide, while JT is about to join the ranks of 60 leading operators and launch 5G SA. Combined with JT’s full fiber to the home service, this will provide seamless ground to air connectivity for residents on the island, making Jersey one of the most connected regions in the world and one of the few places in the world with Ericsson’s end-to-end technology network.

As an important component of the plan, JT has invested a large amount of core network equipment in Guernsey and is on standby at all times. After the Guernsey regulatory authorities establish a spectrum licensing framework for the deployment of 5G and future technologies, JT will switch radio networks to match Jersey’s capabilities.

The new 5G SA network aims to provide world-class connectivity services for JT’s Channel Islands customers, continuously enhancing its reliability, reducing latency, and improving security. The telecommunications company’s focus is on building a solid infrastructure to adapt to future technological developments, maintain world-class standards, and meet expected and unforeseeable data demands.

JT Group CEO Daragh McDermott said, “Network construction is endless; our work never stops because technology is constantly advancing, so our focus will always be on achieving tomorrow’s technology for today’s customers. While meeting current needs, we continue to focus on the future, provide high-quality connectivity services, and work together with partner organizations and businesses to help them fully leverage the advantages of the network. This is to take appropriate risks, make prudent investments, and enable everyone to thrive and innovate, thereby driving Channel Islands’ digital economy forward. ”

Katherine Ainley, CEO of Ericsson UK and Ireland, also added: “Ericsson and JT share a common vision in the next generation of connectivity, committed to creating new possibilities for people, businesses, and society. By investing in Ericsson’s end-to-end solutions, JT is building a powerful network with first-class coverage and performance. This advanced infrastructure not only represents faster and more reliable connections, but will also support new devices, services, and business models, making the Strait Islands a potential global innovation hub. We look forward to continuously deepening our cooperative relationship, further promoting network development, and bringing new experiences to JT’s customers. ”

Jersey Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham said, “We warmly welcome the launch of the new 5G network across the island and the significant changes it brings in enhancing services, security, resilience, and innovative development potential. I was fortunate enough to visit JT’s network operations center and look forward to hearing more about the new network performance and its impact on Jersey customers. ”

Kirsten Morel, Deputy Minister of Sustainable Economic Development, stated that the launch of 5G independent networks is a crucial step in driving sustainable economic growth. It not only enhances connectivity and supports emerging technologies, but also creates opportunities in key areas, making Jersey a testing ground for global digital solutions to address challenges such as aging populations and productivity challenges faced by Western jurisdictions. ”

Daragh added, “We share a common goal of continuously improving the service standards our customers enjoy. We will continue to invest in and develop our network to meet their growing needs while providing excellent customer service.”
