Ericsson plans to increase investment in Japan’s connectivity ecosystem through research and development, initially creating 300 high skilled next-generation telecommunications jobs in Japan. This will also make Japan’s ecosystem an indispensable part of Ericsson’s global ecosystem.

At the same time as announcing this intention, Ericsson President and CEO B ö rje Ekholm is visiting the country.

He said, “Japan is renowned for embracing emerging technologies and becoming a leader in the next generation of network connectivity. We are at the forefront of the biggest technological and innovative changes in history, and connectivity is the key to achieving these changes through open high-performance programmable networks. Ericsson’s goal is to invest in this groundbreaking Japanese tradition by conducting advanced RAN research and development in 5G and other fields, benefiting partners, suppliers, and customers throughout Japan’s entire telecommunications ecosystem. ”

Although this process is still in its early stages, Ekholm stated that this commitment is actively being pushed forward.

He added, ‘Our intention to expand research and development in Japan highlights the strategic importance of the Japanese market to Ericsson. In addition to supplementing Ericsson’s ongoing 6G focused partnership in Japan, it also emphasizes our commitment to working with all local stakeholders to provide the benefits of an open, high-performance programmable network.’. ”

High performance, programmable network speed, low latency, big data capacity, and intelligent capabilities are key to implementing innovative new technology business use cases, including artificial intelligence.

Investments focused on RAN will benefit from close collaboration with Japanese ecosystem suppliers and partners. The new Japanese research and development capabilities will also give local partners the opportunity to play a role in strengthening Ericsson’s global ecosystem.

Per Narvinger, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson, stated that as Japan invests in high-performance programmable 5G networks, this investment will enable Ericsson to better meet Japan’s digital infrastructure needs.

In addition to expanding its research and development business in Japan, Ericsson is also collaborating with Yokohama National University and Japan University of Electronic Communications on 6G research.
