Dr. Cui Baoqiu, Vice President of Xiaomi Group and Chairman of the Group’s Technical Committee, accepted an interview with the “5G Everyone Talk” column jointly initiated by Sina Technology and Sina 5G, and discussed the status changes of 5G, AI, IoT and mobile phones in the era of the Internet of Everything.

The industry is at the intersection of 5G, AI, and IoT

“I think 5G is in a draught, and 5G+AIoT is in a draught. We are at the intersection of three eras. The first is 5G, the second is AI, and the third is IoT.”

In an interview with Sina Technology, Cui Baoqiu said that 5G will accelerate the arrival of the future super Internet, which is the so-called 5G+AIoT; 5G will also promote the integration of future big data, artificial intelligence, cloud service technology and the real economy. There is a lot of room for development, and there are still many opportunities. “So, from application scenarios to the popularization of 5G technology and terminals, to the integration of the entire industry, I think there is still a lot of work to be done. At the beginning, everyone is still in an exciting period.”

Cui Baoqiu believes that if 5G+AIoT represents the next generation of super Internet, the scale of this Internet will be much larger than today’s mobile Internet.

“Therefore, many ecosystems can be win-win and can be connected to each other. In the future, the 5G+AIoT ecosystem can accommodate multiple giants, including domestic and global ones. Will there be a few super giants stand out? It is also possible.”

How does the core position of mobile phones change in the era of Internet of Everything?

Cui Baoqiu notes that a few years ago, some people boldly predicted that mobile phones would disappear in the next few years. This prediction is a bit premature. But there is a trend that is undeniable- as a smart communication device, a mobile phone is a terminal for the mobile Internet, and people basically carry it with them all the time. “In the future, people’s total time on mobile phones may be reduced, because other smart devices will develop, just as mobile phones slowly replaced PCs.”

However, Cui Baoqiu emphasized that, today, mobile phones are definitely still the center of people’s lives, and it may remain the same for a long time in the future.

Cui Baoqiu concluded that it is difficult to say that a certain device becomes the center of people’s lives, but that the ability of the cloud and the end to be integrated is the center of the ubiquitous intelligent interconnection of all things brought about by AIoT and 5G in the future.

5G need to “build roads first, then sports cars”, terminal equipment such as mobile phones still in the beginning

Although 5G is a major trend, Cui Baoqiu also pointed out that the 5G era has just entered, and it is a bit like repairing highways in the past. It is necessary to “build roads first, then sports cars”.  Our infrastructure, network equipment, and base station construction are already far ahead in the world, but mobile terminals that are truly suitable for running 5G and supporting 5G and other smart equipment terminals are still in the beginning, and there will be a slight lag in the process.

Cui Baoqiu finally mentioned that in the 5G and even the future 6G era, there may be many super applications appearing. “The 6G we see is a thing a decade later. Today 6G technology is still in the pre-research stage. Everyone is still focusing on some scenarios, visions, technology pre-research, and standardization. There is still a long way to go.”
