On December 25th, at the “CCSA Next Generation Optical Transport Network Industry and Technical Standards Promotion Committee (TC618) Inaugural Meeting and Next Generation Optical Transport Network Development Forum (NGOF) 2020 Annual Meeting”, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Department of Communications Development Wen Ku made an opening speech, expressing that our country’s optical communications industry actively responds to the country’s “network power” construction and deployment, and works together to promote our country’s optical communications standard technology innovation, industry leadership has achieved remarkable results, and our country’s optical network development and industrial level rank among the top in the world .
According to Wen Ku, as of the end of November 2020, our country’s optical ports accounted for nearly 95% of the total network ports. This figure was only about 34% five years ago. Today, 300 cities across the country have gigabit fiber access capabilities. Our country has built a basically complete optical communications industry chain, and has also achieved excellent results in international standards and product research and development. Products from Chinese enterprises such as Huawei, ZTE, and Fiberhome are highly welcomed in the global market.
Opportunities and challenges coexist in our country’s optical communications industry. To continue to promote the high-quality development of optical networks, we need to pay attention to the following issues:
The first one is the demand for high-speed interconnection of data centers. With the accelerated deployment of gigabit fiber in the Internet of Things and the rapid development of cloud network integration, data centers will become the core of traffic convergence, and high-speed interconnection between clouds will become the main demand for backbone transmission. Expanded transmission bands, ultra-high-speed applications, etc., will become the future light Research and focus in the field of communications.
The second one is the individual needs of industry users. The individual requirements and high-quality requirements of different application scenarios in different industries, while advancing the accelerated evolution of optical network technology and standards, present new challenges to the network operation mode and architecture, and open cloud network platform R&D capabilities to industry users and other telecom companies’ resource capacity, to promote the metropolitan area large-capacity optical transport network to extend to the edge, all these need to be discussed and promoted by all parties.
The third one is to break through bottlenecks and industry shortcomings. Since last year, high-speed optoelectronic devices and chips have become the focus of the optical communications industry. Further focus is needed. New areas such as tunable lasers, ultra-high-speed optical modules, optoelectronic chips, and photonic integration will strengthen technological innovation and international standard output, highlight technical bottlenecks and industry shortcomings and lay a solid foundation for the future development of our country’s optical network.
Wen Ku finally said that with the changes in a century, opportunities are hard to find. Since its establishment, NGOF has actively built an open cooperation and exchange platform to add thought to the development and commercialization of our country’s new generation of optical communication technology, effectively promoted the capabilities of our country’s optical communication industry, and played an important role in promoting the development of my country’s and global optical communication industry. I hope that everyone will work together to overcome the impact of the epidemic, further promote the new achievements of our country’s optical communications development, achieve new breakthroughs, and make greater contributions to a manufacturing power, a network power, and a digital China!
