It is reported that the Democratic leader of the United States Senate urged legislators on Monday to support his proposal to prohibit the United States government from conducting business with semiconductor companies that use manufacturers deemed to be Chinese military contractors.

“If American enterprises want the federal government to buy their products or services, they should not use chips made in China, because the participation of the Chinese government puts our national security at risk,” Senator Chuck Schumer said: “Our government and economy depend on chips made in the United States.”

Schumer and Republican Senator John Corning introduced their proposal. As an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), NDAA is the annual bill making policy of the Ministry of Defense and is expected to be passed in the Senate and the House of Representatives in December.

As one of the only major legislations passed by the Congress every year, NDAA is closely watched by a wide range of industries and other stakeholders. Schumer and Corning’s proposal will expand the existing government ban on the use of Chinese chips.

It is reported that the 2023 NDAA authorization will exceed the expenditure of 800 billion US dollars.

“We need to be tough with the Chinese government and its actions,” Schumer said
