According to reports, like telecom operators in many countries around the world, the US telecom industry is also increasing the signal coverage of 5G network base station construction. The premise of these plans is to buy enough telecom spectrum licenses from the government. The Federal Communications Commission recently stated that the three major U.S. telecommunications giants have won $78 billion worth of spectrum use licenses in a new round of 5G spectrum auctions.
It is reported that the U.S. government’s auction of 5G spectrum for the telecommunications industry is gradually carried out in batches. This time the auction frequency is concentrated in the “C band”. According to data, the C-band is an electromagnetic wave frequency band with relatively good overall performance, with a frequency range of 4 GHz to 8 GHz. The frequency of this auction is very important for telecom operators to build a new generation of 5G networks.
Among the three major U.S. telecom operators, Verizon Communications invested US$45.4 billion and won 3,511 frequency licenses, and the established telecom giant AT&T invested US$23.4 billion and won 1,621 licenses.
T-Mobile, the third largest telecommunications giant in the United States, which previously acquired Sprint, a subsidiary of the SoftBank Group, invested $9.3 billion to obtain 142 frequency licenses.
The Federal Communications Commission stated that this round of 5G spectrum auctions has received a total of US$81.2 billion (including US$78 billion from the above-mentioned three giants).
It is also reported that the demand for 5G frequencies from US telecom operators is far from being met. Recently, the Acting Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission Jessica Rosenworcel proposed to conduct another auction of 5G spectrum resources in October this year, mainly in the range of 3.45 GHz to 3.55 GHz. Rosenworth’s proposal will be voted on at the meeting of the Federal Communications Commission on March 17.
Currently, the users of spectrum resources mentioned by Rosenworth include the radar system of the US military. The US Department of Defense has expressed its willingness to share frequency resources with telecom operators. The Federal Communications Commission also stated that it will ensure that 5G communications between the military and the telecommunications industry will not interfere with each other.
