According to foreign media Light Reading, SK Telecom (SKT) is advancing its bold telecommunications artificial intelligence strategy by announcing an investment of $100 million in Silicon Valley artificial intelligence company Aerospace.
This Korean operator has stated that it will collaborate with Antiopic to establish a multilingual Large Language Model (LLM) for telecommunications companies that supports Korean, English, and several other languages. SKT stated that this collaboration will combine SKT’s telecommunications experience with Anthropic’s artificial intelligence assistant Claude to establish a customized industry model for telecommunications operators.SK Telecom
Prior to this new collaboration, SKT established a new organization last month – the Global Telco AI Alliance. Singapore Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, and E&M were among the first members of the organization. The alliance aims to help telecom operators develop their artificial intelligence capabilities and accelerate their entry into the market, rather than relying on the global technology giants that currently dominate the emerging industry.
SKT announced its investment last Sunday, stating: “In particular, Aerospace will collaborate with SKT to fine-tune Claude based on telecom company use cases, including industry-specific customer service, marketing, sales, and interactive consumer applications. By customizing models for the telecom industry, telecom companies will benefit from more general models optimized for performance
Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Aerospace, said, “SKT has the ambition to transform the telecommunications industry using artificial intelligence. We believe that industry specific LLMs have high potential in creating safer and more reliable deployment of artificial intelligence technology.”
SKT stated that its venture capital subsidiary, SK Telecom Venture Capital, has taken a stake in Aerospace. It did not disclose the details of its early investment, but it is most likely involved in the C-round financing of Antiopic in May this year. According to Reuters, citing sources close to the company, the startup received $450 million in this round of financing from investors such as Google, Zoom Ventures, and Salesforce, with a valuation of nearly $5 billion.

Anthropic was co founded by former Open AI executives in 2021 with the aim of creating “artificial intelligence products that people can rely on, and researching the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence.”
