Rakuten Mobile announced that it will begin deploying base stations using radio units (RU) developed by Fujitsu Limited in 2025 to accelerate the expansion of its 5G (Sub6) network.
With its expertise in establishing fully virtualized, cloud native mobile networks based on the Open RAN standard in Japan, Rakuten Mobile will continue to rapidly deploy 5G Sub6 base stations and expand their coverage. Fujitsu will support Rakuten Mobile in launching 5G commercial services through its compact and energy-efficient RAN, and contribute to the further global adoption of Open RAN.Rakuten Mobile 的图像结果
The 44R21 model used by Rakuten Mobile adopts the O-RAN specification developed by the O-RAN Alliance, a global community that promotes the development of open RAN specifications. RU facilitates communication between distributed units (DU) and centralized units (CU) of the base station through the forward interface (1). It has a good record of interoperability with equipment from various domestic and international suppliers, enabling telecommunications operators to diversify their equipment choices and reduce supply chain risks. In addition, using Fujitsu’s proprietary technology, the wireless device design is compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient, which helps reduce space requirements and lower network operating costs.
The RU 44R21 base model will be exhibited at MWC 2025 in Barcelona, Spain from March 3rd to 6th, 2025.
Looking ahead, Rakuten Mobile will leverage its leading virtualization network technology and existing base station infrastructure to shorten the lead time from construction to operation, ensuring cost-effective deployment of base stations. In addition, Rakuten Mobile will discuss future collaborations with Fujitsu aimed at promoting the global adoption of these devices and accelerating the global adoption of Open RAN technology.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Fujitsu to accelerate the launch of high-performance, energy-efficient 5G base stations. This partnership will enable us to provide excellent mobile services to more customers, “commented Sharad Srivastawa, Co CEO and Chief Technology Officer of Rakuten Mobile.
Masaaki Moribayashi, CEO and Senior Vice President of Network Business and Special Tasks at Fujitsu, commented, “Fujitsu’s focus is on developing a compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient innovative wireless platform. In addition to this O-RAN compliant wireless device, Fujitsu will also leverage its extensive experience in O-RAN connectivity to support Rakuten Mobile in building flexible and efficient networks.”
