On March 2, according to the latest data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), China has applied for 68,720 patents through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in 2020, ranking first in the world.

Followed by the United States with 59,230 patent applications, Japan and South Korea ranked third and fourth.

The report pointed out that the number of global patent applications in 2020 will increase by 4%, and the total number of applications will reach 275,900, which is the highest number ever.

China has filed patent applications with WIPO since 1993.

It is reported that there was only one application that year, and it was only 276 until 1999. After 28 years, this number has increased by a hundredfold.

In terms of enterprises, China’s Huawei is far ahead with 5,464 applications, and has become the world’s largest source of applications for four consecutive years.

Samsung of South Korea (3093), Mitsubishi of Japan (2810), LG of South Korea (2759), BOE of China (1892) and OPPO of China (1801) are followed.

In the top ten, Chinese companies occupy three places, and more than half are mainly engaged in digital communications.

In terms of educational institutions, the University of California ranked first with 559 applications, followed by Shenzhen University, Tsinghua University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

According to statistics, among the top ten universities on the list, five are from China, four are from the United States, and one is from Japan.

From the perspective of fields, computer technology accounts for the largest proportion of global patent applications, reaching 9.2%, followed by digital communications (8.3%), medical technology (6.6%), etc.

It is worth mentioning that since the World Intellectual Property “Patent Cooperation Treaty” came into operation in 1978, the United States has continued to top the list. In 2019, China surpassed the United States for the first time and became the world’s largest source of patent applications.

I believe that with the development of domestic economy and technology, enterprises increase technology research and development funds and the introduction of high-end talents. In 2021, my country will still lead the world in patent applications and achieve the triple crown.
