The latest report from market research company Omdia stated that the current new crown epidemic is expected to have a lasting impact on the way we live, study, work, socialize and care for ourselves and families. Therefore, consumers have begun to imagine the situation after the epidemic, especially changes in family arrangements and daily necessities.

Mariana Zamoszczyk, senior analyst at Omdia Consumer Services, believes that the family will become one of the most important centers of lifestyle transformation in the post-epidemic era, which will not only promote the continued demand for smart home solutions in the next few years, but will also encourage people to adapt well to the new changes that are taking place in their families.

Under the new environment, five types of smart home solutions will gain greater demand:

  • Technologies assisted living, such as health monitoring sensors and trackers, and smart displays for video calls with health professionals and caregivers;
  • Products that can help users avoid touching objects through voice control, such as smart lamps;
  • Solutions that can keep people away from others, such as video doorbells;
  • Equipment that is expected to limit the current epidemic situation and future virus transmission through preventive measures, such as air purifiers;
  • Finally, advanced technologies that can support aggregation functions and provide services for multiple applications in multiple areas, such as AI smart speakers.

In addition, the need for “zero-touch” self-installing solutions will be critical. Suppliers and service providers in the smart home market need to focus on true plug-and-play solutions with a very simple installation process. At the same time, as the social distance continues to exist, they will have to replan the market strategy for other solutions that rely heavily on professional installation services (such as smart thermostats and smart door locks).

Finally, another result of this outbreak is that it will accelerate activities in the field of home improvement and sanitation. Compared with traditional solutions, smarter solutions will be favored.  This means that the longer you stay at home, the more you need to keep the room clean, which gives people the opportunity to improve their living conditions with sweeping robots, air purifiers and many other products with home hygiene related functions- they will also gain new interest from consumers. Nowadays, the benefits of these solutions are becoming more and more obvious. For market participants in this field, the key is to provide solutions that are not only affordable, but also have business flexibility and installments and help consumers in time when non-essential expenses are restricted.
