Nokia announced that it would expand the production of PON optical line terminals (OLT) at the Sriperimbudur factory near Chennai, India. This decision is to respond to the growing demand of local customers in India and the international market.

The transformation of consumer behavior, from home work to data-rich entertainment services, is driving the demand for broadband. This demand is matched by strong institutional support. A large amount of funds from governments and private equity funds around the world are promoting investment in broadband and optical fiber connections. Nokia is currently a participant of the government of India’s Production Linkage Incentive (PLI) program and is expanding its production capacity to Chennai to meet the growing demand.
The demand for optical fiber is also shifting to new regions, with strong demand in markets such as Japan, India and Southeast Asia in the Asia-Pacific region. Most of the demand will come in the form of fiber to the home (FTTH), but mobile network operators (MNOs) also have a lot of demand because they have deployed 5G and need to deploy the next generation of fiber in their transmission network to carry the expected data traffic surge. Nokia plans to produce PON OLT in India, which will promote the company to expand its production base and geographical coverage.
