According to the news, although the market speculated that Botong might lose Apple’s cellular modem chip order before 2025, Botong had signed a 3nm chip production order with TSMC in 2022.
The news pointed out that if Botong withdrew part of its 3nm chip order with TSMC due to the loss of Apple’s order, TSMC would still be able to seize Apple’s internal order to replace Botong chips.
It is reported that TSMC held a 3nm mass production expansion ceremony on December 29, 2022 at the new site of No. 18 wafer factory in Taiwan, China South Science Park.
Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, said at the ceremony that the yield of the current 3nm process has been equivalent to that of the 5nm mass production in the same period, and has been produced in large quantities, helping customers develop new products. Compared with 5nm, 3nm process logic density increases by 60% and power consumption decreases by 30-35% at the same speed, which is the most advanced technology in the world.
In terms of market demand, Liu Deyin said that TSMC’s 3nm process market demand is very strong. Since the first year of mass production of 3nm process technology, the annual revenue will be greater than 5nm in the same period. It is estimated that within five years of mass production of 3nm technology, it will release the value of terminal products of 1.5 trillion dollars worldwide.
In terms of yield, semiconductor industry analysts and experts estimate that the current yield of 3 nm of TSMC can be as low as 60% to 70%, or as high as 75% to 80%, which is quite good for the first batch.
