It is reported that the 5nm chip developed by Dingdao Zhixin, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lenovo, has been returned to the film and has been lit recently, which means that the tape-out is successful, and then it can enter the stage of mass production. The next step will be related functional testing.

 

The 5nm used in Lenovo’s self-developed chips is currently a very advanced process. The A15 and A16 processors used in Apple’s iPhone 14 are also at the 5nm process level. Lenovo’s 5nm chips are not sure whether they are manufactured by TSMC or Samsung. The former is more likely.

 

However, it is still unknown what Lenovo’s 5nm chip does. Generally speaking, such advanced processes can only be used by CPU, GPU or AI chips, and it is very difficult to use the most advanced technology for the first chip. And risky moves require huge investment and R&D personnel support.

 

Lenovo has increased its investment in the chip field in recent years. According to statistics, since 2021, it has invested in at least 8 chip-related companies in various ways, including AI chips, CMOS chips, IoT chips, 5G RF chips, and IGBT chips, optical chips, single-photon sensor chips, semiconductor laser chips, intelligent audio and video processing SoC chips and other fields.

 

In 2021, Lenovo established its own chip subsidiary called Dingdao Zhixin (Shanghai) Semiconductor Co., Ltd., which is 100% controlled by Lenovo. The company’s business scope is the design and sales of integrated circuits, as well as various businesses in the field of semiconductor technology. General Manager Shi Zhenggong has worked in companies such as Leadcore, Huawei and OPPO. The company’s SoC head Yuan Wei also has work experience in Leadcore.
