According to the Associated Press, on Monday local time, the global communications giant Nokia issued a statement saying that the company has become a partner of NASA and will build the first LTE/4G communication system on the moon to help humans achieve the target to continue to be stationed on the surface of the moon in 2028.

Affected by this news, the company’s share price has risen by 4.96% as of the time of writing, a new high in the past year.

Specifically, Nokia’s Bell Labs is responsible for this mission. The current plan is to deploy the first ultra-compact, low-power, space-reinforced end-to-end LTE solution on the lunar surface by the end of 2022. In addition to NASA, Nokia will also cooperate with Intuitive Machines, a space system service provider based in Houston. It is reported that data transmission applications such as remote control, real-time navigation and high-definition video will be supported after deployment.

Nokia further stated that with the completion of the lunar 4G network, it will further upgrade to the latest 5G network in the future. According to media reports, Bell Labs received a $14.1 million grant from NASA, but Nokia has not yet confirmed the funding.

According to NASA’s Artemis plan, the United States is preparing to send astronauts to the moon again after half a century in 2024, and to achieve “continuous” stationing of mankind on the lunar surface in 2028. In order to realize this plan, NASA has selected Musk’s SpaceX, Bezos’ Blue Origin and Dynetics to develop lunar landing equipment.
