Recently, at the on-site award ceremony of the 2023 Africa Com, Huawei and South Africa MTN won the “Sustainable Development Champion of the Year Award” in 2023. AfricaCom is the largest annual event in the communication industry in Africa, with awards aimed at recognizing organizations and institutions that have made innovative and outstanding contributions to the telecommunications industry in Africa.
To address the escalating power rationing crisis in South Africa, MTN South Africa has closely collaborated with Huawei to launch a resilient and intelligent green site solution, utilizing green and intelligent technologies for end-to-end site diagnosis, systematic transformation of “supply and distribution management”, and intelligent operation and maintenance. For example, this innovation includes anti-theft renovation and smart electricity usage, greatly adapting to power outages and weak network conditions, ensuring over 99% of site energy availability. In addition, Huawei’s most advanced OWS+NetEco intelligent operation and maintenance platform has been introduced, which is based on AI technology to achieve the optimal energy efficiency of solar, municipal, and diesel coordinated energy supply. Through deep cooperation, we aim to meet the demand for network flexibility, significantly improve the coverage of South Africa’s basic wireless network, achieve the best user experience, and assist MTN in building a green and minimalist infrastructure, further advancing the MTN Group’s Net Zero strategy. The successful experience will be widely replicated in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Kenya to address the power supply shortage challenges faced by these countries.
