Google today announced a plan called Nuvem, which is a new transatlantic submarine fiber optic cable system connecting Portugal, Bermuda, and the United States.
According to a Google press release, the name “Nuvem” of this submarine cable is named after the Portuguese word “cloud”. Google stated that 95% of global data flow is currently transmitted through submarine optical cables, which are said to “improve the network resilience of the entire Atlantic, help meet the growing demand for digital services, increase the diversity of international routes, and support the development of related communication technology infrastructure”.
Bermuda has long been committed to the submarine cable market, and we welcome Nuvem submarine cables into our rapidly growing digital Atlantic hub, “said Walter Roban, Bermuda’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. Bermuda looks forward to collaborating with Google on cable projects and establishing broader partnerships to leverage the benefits of digital infrastructure investment.
Portuguese Infrastructure Minister Jo o Galamba said, “Google’s investment combines our vision for Portugal in the telecommunications and data sectors, promoting strong connections with other regions. The Portuguese government considers this investment to be very important.”

Nuvem is expected to be put into use in 2026 and will increase data transmission capacity, improve reliability, and reduce latency for global Google users and Google Cloud customers. Together with Firmina and Equiano, it will create important new data corridors connecting North and South America, Europe, and Africa.
