International research organization Gartner released the latest cloud computing market tracking data. Alibaba Cloud ranked first in the Asia-Pacific market and ranked third in the global market. Alibaba Cloud’s Asia-Pacific market share rose from 26% to 28%, close to the sum of Amazon and Microsoft; the global market share rose from 7.7% to 9.1%, further widening the gap with fourth place Google and squeezing Amazon’s share.
The data shows that the global cloud computing IaaS market continues to grow rapidly in 2019, up 37.3% year-on-year, and the overall market size reaches 44.5 billion US dollars. The global market 3A pattern is stable, but Amazon’s market share is squeezed by Microsoft and Alibaba Cloud, and it has dropped from 48% to 45% in 2018. Alibaba Cloud ranked third, with the fastest market share growth, rising from 7.7% in 2018 to 9.1%.
Compared to the world, the Asia-Pacific market is growing faster, and the cloud computing market has grown by 50% year-on-year. In the Asia-Pacific market, Alibaba Cloud ranked first, and its market share further increased, from 26% in 2018 to 28.2%, close to the sum of Amazon and Microsoft. During the same period, Amazon’s share fell from 18% last year to 17%.
Recently, Alibaba Cloud announced that it will invest 200 billion yuan in the next three years for the development of major core technologies such as cloud operating systems, servers, chips, and networks and the construction of future-oriented data centers. Reinvesting 200 billion yuan in three years means that the size of Alibaba Cloud’s data centers and servers will triple again, sprinting into the world’s largest cloud infrastructure.
The Financial Times commented that Alibaba Cloud has maintained a solid market share in China in recent years, with the Chinese market accounting for 46% in the fourth quarter of 2019. The new crown epidemic has stimulated the market’s demand for cloud infrastructure and technology behind remote work. After the epidemic, enterprises and institutions will significantly accelerate the pace of going to the cloud.
Analysts generally believe that Alibaba Cloud will further expand its investment in cloud infrastructure and core technologies, “catching up with Amazon in the next few years is a high probability event”.
