Ericsson and Turkcell announced the successful trial deployment of Ericsson’s 5G Cloud Radio Access Network (RAN) technology on Turkcell’s network. Through deployment, Turkcell became one of the first communication service providers (CSPs) in the world to attempt this technology.

In this experiment, Ericsson provided hardware and software, and conducted demonstrations, test cases, and performance evaluations. The deployment of Ericsson’s 5G cloud RAN will provide Turkcell with greater flexibility and scalability, enabling faster delivery of innovative services to the market.

Ericsson Cloud RAN is a cloud native solution that virtualizes RAN functionality and separates hardware from software, providing new opportunities for CSPs who wish to implement cloud native technology and open network architecture to expand and improve network efficiency and virtualization.

By adopting Cloud RAN technology, Turkcell aims to introduce new software features and incorporate an open RAN approach into its Service Management and Choreography (SMO) framework. It will also be able to enhance the network management capabilities of cloud RAN and dedicated deployments through rApps. The implementation of Cloud RAN is expected to improve flexibility and agility, and unlock new features through centralized deployment.

Dr. Çağrı Güngör, Chief Network Technology Officer of Turkcell, stated, “As one of the first global cases, the 5G cloud RAN technology trial conducted in collaboration with Ericsson will help strengthen Turkcell’s cloud based network operations strategy. This initiative represents a new step in Turkcell’s technological leadership and will support our transition to an open RAN network strategy, enhancing the advanced connectivity experience we provide in T ü rkiye. At Turkcell, we are committed to investing in innovative technologies to provide reliable and high-quality services to our customers. Our continued investment in our long-term partnership with Ericsson demonstrates our shared vision of supporting customers and advancing the country’s digital transformation. ”

Işıl Yalçın, Vice President of Ericsson Middle East and Africa Region and Head of Ericsson T ü rkiye, said, “The Cloud RAN trial with Turkcell strengthens our partnership and reflects our shared commitment to driving Türkiye’s digital transformation and innovation goals. Our cloud RAN solution aims to provide the necessary flexibility and performance for modern networks while improving overall scalability. This trial aligns with Ericsson’s strategy of supporting our customers in transforming their networks into a platform and enabling new monetization use cases through open APIs. Through this Cloud RAN trial deployment, we demonstrate the technology’s ability to deploy, manage, and upgrade Turkcell networks more dynamically.”

The partnership between Turkcell and Ericsson is built upon the long-standing partnership between Ericsson and Turkcell, which dates back to 1994. Recently, two companies have collaborated to explore W-band solutions to demonstrate how the development of mobile backhaul can meet the growing demand for broadband services.
