On February 20, 2020, Corning announced that it is cooperating with Qualcomm Technologies to jointly develop 5G millimeter wave infrastructure systems for enterprises and public places. This 5G system integrates Qualcomm Technologies’ leading 5G millimeter wave technology and Corning’s industry-recognized Small-cell technology, which can realize a cost-effective and easy-to-install 5G indoor network.

The system is expected to be the first system to provide millimeter-wave 5G-NR networks for indoor environments (including enterprises, offices, university campuses, hospitals, hotels, and shopping malls). The 5G system uses Corning’s virtualized RAN architecture to manage related millimeter-wave Small-cells.

Through Qualcomm’s FSM100xx 5G RAN platform, Corning can obtain leading millimeter wave technology capabilities to build a small, powerful and energy-efficient millimeter wave infrastructure, thereby achieving a cost-effective and scalable indoor network.

This collaboration is expected to give Corning access to capabilities and features such as beamforming and advanced scheduling to support the unique needs of indoor environments. The Corning LTE Enterprise RAN system based on the Qualcomm FSM99xx 4G RAN platform enables mobile operators to quickly deploy 5G-NSA networks.

“Corning has decades of experience designing, installing, and tuning advanced cellular networks. Our experience in network design, as well as our understanding of the changing needs of different customers, will help us solve the complexities of indoor 5G millimeter wave solutions.  Benefits to our customers. By integrating the leading technologies and experience of Corning and Qualcomm Technologies, we aim to provide enterprises with attractive and affordable 5G millimeter wave system solutions.” Michelle Engarto, Vice President, Wireless Product Line Management of Corning Optical Communications said.

“Corning and Qualcomm Technologies have a long history in infrastructure innovation, spanning the era of LTE, LTE-U/LAA, CBRS, etc. We are pleased to be able to push the fruitful cooperation between the two parties into the 5G era. We look forward to bringing the combination of 5G millimeter wave technology and Corning’s Small-cell and enterprise expertise has developed a cost-effective, powerful and scalable 5G millimeter wave infrastructure to achieve a 5G millimeter wave indoor network with both performance and capacity.” Puneet Sethi, Director of Product Management of Qualcomm Technologies said.

Corning hardware is known for its small size, aesthetics, and low power consumption. With the support of Qualcomm Technologies 4G and 5G RAN platforms, Corning hopes to provide customers with 5G solutions with the same outstanding features. For Corning’s existing 4G customers, only a simple process is required to install the 5G-NSA service function, and then they can begin to enjoy the benefits brought by the 5G network.
