Leading digital infrastructure and technology provider Cirion Technologies is planning to deploy a Ciena solution, including the industry’s first 1.6 Tb/s coherent optical technology WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e). This upgrade will enhance Cirion’s network capacity across its vast land and underwater networks, and includes an expected deployment of 1.6 Tb/s single carrier wavelength for the first time in Latin America.
Cirion has over 160 interconnected data centers in more than 60 cities in Latin America, and will utilize Ciena’s WL6e to connect key data centers throughout the region, achieving high-capacity, low latency connectivity that is crucial for customers to leverage bandwidth intensive applications such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and streaming services.
Alejandro Girardotti, Senior Director of Product, Innovation, and Strategic Alliances at Cirion Technologies, stated, “Ciena is at the forefront of optical innovation, constantly advancing its technology to meet our business needs. After successfully deploying WaveLogic 5, it is clear that upgrading our network with WaveLogic 6 is the crucial next step. Ciena’s solution will enable us to effectively meet the ever-changing needs of our customers and seamlessly adapt to the rapid adoption of cloud, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies, while maximizing network efficiency and sustainability.”
Cirion recently announced plans to upgrade the SAC East submarine cable, which connects Saint Croix Island in the US Virgin Islands and Brazil, significantly increasing channel speeds to 1.2 Tb/s through WL6e. In addition, Cirion will also light up its new SAC-2 subsea route, which is part of the state-of-the-art Firmina subsea system, spanning 14517 kilometers and multiple sections, connecting the United States, Brazil, and Argentina. This deployment will utilize Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution, equipped with a 6500 optical platform and RLS submarine line terminal equipment (SLTE). The 6500 will be powered by WL6e, achieving connections of 800Gb/s and 1.2 Tb/s on the 10975 kilometer and 2500 kilometer fiber optic cable segments, respectively. For the ground segment, WL6e will enable Cirion to deploy 1.6 Tb/s wavelengths on metropolitan DCI and backhaul networks.

Gustavo Castello, Director of Strategic International Accounts at Ciena, said: “Cirion is a well-known leader in Latin America, committed to driving innovation and providing reliable connectivity solutions for customers. With Ciena’s coherent optical technology, Cirion is strengthening its ability to improve network efficiency and supporting its commitment to deploying more environmentally friendly and scalable infrastructure, paving the way for a more sustainable digital future.”
Cirion will also deploy Ciena’s coherent aggregation routers 8110, 8112, and 8114 to provide advanced routing capabilities and high-speed flexible aggregation. In addition, Ciena’s Navigator network control suite will provide comprehensive network management and control capabilities, including liquid-phase spectroscopic analysis, to effectively monitor, configure, and optimize its multi-layer network for improved performance and reliability.
