It is known that institutions such as the Institute of Computing at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have designed the world’s first fully automated CPU chip, Enlightenment 1, using AI technology. The milestone of fully automated chip design has been achieved, and the Enlightenment 1 processor is the world’s first CPU chip that is automatically generated by AI without human intervention. This 32-bit architecture processor based on the RSIC-V instruction set has completed chip verification and successfully ran the Linux operating system and SPEC CPU2000 testing program. Although its performance is comparable to Intel’s 486 processor, this research is of great significance.
This CPU is based on RISC-V’s 32-bit architecture, which is currently 4000 times larger in circuit size compared to GPT-4. Its performance is comparable to Intel 486 series CPUs and can run Linux operating systems.
Previously, there have been some attempts globally to automatically design chips through AI, but they are often too simple and lack practical applications. The Enlightenment 1 of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was designed based on the BSD algorithm, using binary guessing graphs. In just 5 hours, it generated 4 million logic gates, which is 4000 times larger than the chip that GPT-4 can design.
Although the scale of Enlightenment 1 is relatively small compared to the current top-level CPU, the rapid progress of AI technology will make AI design chips mainstream in the future, greatly improving chip design efficiency. These automatically generated chips have enormous potential to drive innovation in the semiconductor field and bring faster and more powerful chip products.
