Nokia stated that Mediacom, the fifth largest cable television operator in the United States, is building a PON network to provide gigabit broadband services to underserved rural communities. Driven by some state and federal funding projects, Mediacom will utilize Nokia’s XGS-PON system and devices to support new geographic service areas.
Mediacom provides broadband services to 3.3 million households and businesses in 22 states, and will deploy Nokia’s Box Based Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) and Node Based OLTs. Chassis based solutions will be used in small, unconditional cabinets, while node based solutions will be installed on wiring harnesses or poles, capable of withstanding harsh external environments.
J.R. Walden, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Mediacom, stated, “Nokia is currently providing Mediacom with systems up to 25G PON. Their platform effectively supports our services while allowing for future growth and expansion, which will help Mediacom maintain its market and industry leadership position in advanced, high-performance data services.”
David Eckard, Vice President of Nokia Broadband Partners, stated: “The United States is committed to ensuring that all Americans have access to the highest quality broadband services. Mediacom’s goal of connecting to rural America is crucial to helping bridge the digital divide in our community, and Nokia is proud to be chosen as its partner. By providing key 10G fiber optic solutions and optical modules to the United States, Nokia will be ready to support operators seeking funding and connecting more people faster.”
Jamie Lenderman, Research Manager and Chief Analyst at Omdia, said, “Due to the inherent energy efficiency and almost infinite scalability of next-generation PON technologies such as XGS-PON and 25G-PON, cable TV operators are increasingly deploying FTTH in new and over construction, highlighting MSO’s green network strategy.”
