Nokia collaborated with TPG Telecom and MediaTek to showcase a groundbreaking 360 degree video live broadcast, showcasing the future of Metaverse. The video was achieved through Nokia’s state-of-the-art 5G uplink carrier aggregation (CA) technology, TPG Telecom’s commercial 5G network, and MediaTek’s 5G mobile chipset technology. This demonstration was held at Nokia’s 5G Future Laboratory in Sydney, Australia, showcasing how CA technology can change the experience of watching TV, movies, and sports.
By combining two or more frequency bands below 6 GHz, Nokia’s CA technology provides optimized 5G uplink speed, enabling real-time transmission of high-quality 360 degree videos. The demonstration utilized Nokia’s latest energy-saving AirScale product portfolio solution, including baseband, large-scale MIMO, and remote radio head products, supported by its ReefShark chipset. MediaTek uses MediaTek’s M80 5G modem to provide its 5G mobile platform, which has been integrated into the Dimensity SoC series. This demonstration uses uplink carrier aggregation technology to combine 15mHz carriers in the 700mhz frequency band (n28) with 90mhz carriers in the 3.6 GHz frequency band (n78), achieving a peak uplink throughput of 159mbps.
During the presentation, Leslie Shannon, the head of Nokia’s Trends and Innovation department, gave a speech on the future of Metaverse. This speech covers how 360 degree video live streaming through 5G has become a key component of some industrial virtual world experiences, such as allowing workers to view remote locations through VR headphones while remotely controlling robots in that location for potentially hazardous tasks such as handling explosives.
