According to reports, in addition to providing faster mobile internet, 5G networks have the potential to completely transform global cargo transportation. Europe has also joined this experiment, and Hungary has opened the first port on the European continent to use this technology to load and unload containers, thanks to the 5G network provided by Chinese technology company Huawei.
The East West Gate logistics center is only 15 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border, surrounded by the Great Hungarian Plain, and located in the small town of Fényeslitke in the country.
This facility was recently put into use in October 2022 and aims to transport 1 million containers arriving locally by rail or road every year.
Thanks to Huawei’s 5G network provided to the Hungarian company that owns the terminal, all these containers are handled by automatic cranes.
At the logistics center in Hungary, operators use 5G wireless technology to remotely control automatic cranes in independent rooms. During the loading and unloading process, they use cameras to place each container in a suitable position in the room: whether it is transferred from one train to another or from one train to a truck, it can be accurately completed.
An operator joked in an interview: “It’s like playing Tetris.”
