The constant changes in consumer demand and the continuous deployment of 5G networks have brought huge business opportunities to suppliers. Nokia and Ericsson, two telecom equipment suppliers, recently announced to expand their manufacturing scale in India.
Nokia recently announced that the company will expand its PON OLT manufacturing at its plant in Sriperumbudur, southern India, to meet the growing domestic and international demand for high-speed broadband in India.

Indian Telecom“India’s fixed network operators and mobile network operators have a huge demand for optical fiber connections. Our Chennai factory’s OLT production will timely promote to meet this demand.” Sanjay Malik, senior vice president of Nokia and head of Indian market, said in a press release.
A few months ago, Ericsson, another European supplier, announced that it would expand the capacity and operation of its partner Jabil in the PuNa plant in western India to cope with the deployment of 5G network in India.
“With the launch of 5G in India, we are expanding the production of 5G telecom equipment in PuNa in stages to support the network deployment of Indian telecom service operators. The production in India is part of our global production footprint on all continents.” Nunzio Mirtillo, regional head of Ericsson in Southeast Asia, Oceania and India, said in a press release in December 2022.
It is also reported that in addition to Nokia and Ericsson, Samsung may invest about 4 billion Indian rupees (US $48.47 million) to start manufacturing 4G and 5G wireless devices in India. Samsung’s largest mobile terminal equipment manufacturing plant is already located in India.
Although Nokia and Ericsson have established manufacturing departments in India since 2008 and 1994 respectively, their manufacturing businesses are mainly concentrated in China. However, the Indian government has now launched the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) plan to make it easier for telecom equipment suppliers to expand manufacturing. Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung have all participated in the PLI program in India.
