Vodafone successfully conducted a test call in Oman and Ericsson, which will pave the way for Vodafone users to launch 5G independent voice and data services in the Sultanate of Oman. Vodafone Oman’s successful VoNR independent 5G network proof-of-concept call is part of the ongoing project of Vodafone and Ericsson, which aims to develop an efficient and reliable national independent network and realize high-quality, seamless voice and data services.

Using Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G core and Ericsson’s IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) technology, the proof-of-concept shows the potential of mobile networks in improving voice quality nationwide. It also demonstrated the ability of Vodafone Network to provide 5G dedicated voice and communication services for consumers and enterprises using experimental terminals, which will be later replaced by commercial terminals produced by Vodafone partners.
Unlike non-independent 5G networks, independent 5G networks are not based on existing 4G networks and technologies, but match 5G radios with cloud native 5G core networks to achieve flexibility and speed to meet current and future customer needs.
