It is reported that SNS JU recently passed its second research and innovation work plan (2023) to promote the 6G research in Europe.
On December 14, 2022, SNS JU adopted the 2023-2024 Research and Innovation (R&I) Work Plan, including information on the collection of proposals for the Horizon Europe project in 2023. The R&I work plan (Annex II of the 2023 SNS annual work plan) will serve as the basis for the second SNS proposal solicitation activity, providing 132 million euros (currently about 975 million yuan) of special public funds.

The work plan establishes the second phase of the SNS roadmap and expands the 35 SNS Phase I research and innovation (R&I) projects launched in January 2023. The focus of the work plan is to supplement the research and design of enabling technology through more system-oriented research and specialized prototype design and experiment, as well as long-term research and design of disruptive concepts. It will further address the technical and commercial realization of the 6G vision and support the development of 6G standardization through joint activities covering industrial and commercial aspects, sustainability and social challenges, microelectronics and a series of key international cooperation activities.
The second phase plan will be launched on January 17, 2023, including the following three supplementary processes. Process B: Research revolutionary technological progress, prepare for 6G, promote revolutionary progress in animal networking, equipment and software, with the goal of reaching low to medium technology readiness level (TRL), and provide innovative solutions for real life networks, including international cooperation with the United States. Process C: SNS system enablers and proof-of-concept (PoC). The goal is to further develop, combine and consolidate the pilot infrastructure across Europe to support the development of SNS at all stages. Process D: large-scale SNS experiments and pilot projects in the vertical field, exploring and demonstrating the infrastructure needed for technology, advanced applications and services in the vertical field, focusing on the two priorities of automobile and health, smart city, agriculture or education. These three processes will be supplemented by SNS Coordination and Support Action (CSA) to address social challenges related to SNS technology.
It is noteworthy that the 2023 SNS R&I work plan also highlights some indicative R&I themes for 2024. These themes will be approved later in 2023 and will be the basis of the third SNS proposal solicitation activity in 2024, providing about 129 million euros (currently about 953 million yuan) of funds.
