It is reported that the US Chip Act has promoted a large amount of private investment in the US, which will strengthen the US economy, create jobs and the flexibility of the supply chain.
According to the news, the United States passed the Chip and Science Act in August 2022, which is an important step in attracting investment in semiconductor manufacturing and innovation in the United States. Although the potential of the new law remains to be observed, its effective and efficient implementation has been obvious to all.
As pointed out by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), companies in the semiconductor ecosystem have announced a number of initiatives aimed at improving the manufacturing capacity of the United States from the first time the American Chip Act was proposed to the few months after the bill was passed. Some of these projects are expected to be funded by the US Chip Act and rely on the commitment of policy makers to such funding, while others are pushed forward after the enactment of legislation.
According to SIA, the United States has announced more than 40 new semiconductor ecosystem projects. This includes the construction of new semiconductor plants, the expansion of existing plants and the provision of facilities for manufacturing materials and equipment. Today, 16 states have announced nearly $200 billion of private investment to improve domestic manufacturing capacity. In addition, these projects have announced about 40000 new high-quality jobs.
The news pointed out that these new projects include new, expanded or upgraded wafer plants, semiconductor equipment facilities and facilities for the production of key materials in various semiconductor fields (such as advanced logic, memory, analog and traditional chips). These measures are considered necessary to strengthen the chip ecosystem in the United States.
At present, some projects have broken ground and started the construction process, and are expected to be inspired by the American Chip Act – production related to these projects may start at the end of 2024 at the earliest. However, the construction of other projects will start in 2023, and some projects encouraged by the Chip and Science Act, such as those involving the addition or upgrading of tools, may go faster. The SIA report concluded that, so far, the announced projects involve the expansion of 9 existing chip factories and the construction of 23 new factories.
