According to foreign media Light Reading, Cox Communications, one of the largest cable companies in the United States, plans to promote mobile services this fall.

According to Mobile World Live, Cox plans to launch mobile services first in Hampton Roads, Virginia, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Omaha, Nebraska, with an ad campaign planned for August.

A Cox representative declined to answer Light Reading’s questions about pricing plans. However, the Cox Mobile website reminds users that speeds may slow down after consuming 5GB, and unused data won’t roll over to the next month. The site also hints at a “pay-as-you-go” option. This product is only available to Cox’s internet customers.

It is unclear which mobile network Cox will use. “Contractual obligations limit us from discussing our MNO [mobile network operator] partners,” a Cox representative told Mobile World Live, noting that Cox will offer 4G and 5G services.

Cox has a long history in the wireless industry. The company built its own 3G CDMA wireless network in 2010 using the 700MHz spectrum and Huawei equipment. During this period, it also sold mobile services through the Sprint MVNO. However, it closed the business in 2012.

With the launch this fall, Cox will join Comcast, Charter, Altice and WideOpenWest (WOW) in combining cable service with mobile service.
