US telecommunications company Frontier announced that it will provide symmetrical 2Gbps internet service across its entire fiber-optic broadband network. To encourage the usage, Frontier will offer its first 1,000 customers a 43-inch Amazon Fire TV and Logitech webcam. This package costs $149.99 per month.

Nick Jeffery, President and CEO of Frontier, said: “As we unleash the power of fiber optic networks, we are delighted to be the first and only major ISP to offer network-wide 2Gbps internet service. Today is proving that Frontier is doing what customers want. What cable can’t do－bring faster speeds and greater value to consumers as we build Gigabit America.”

While some still wonder how residential users will use gigabit broadband, Frontier claims that due to the number of connected devices in the average home (Frontier estimates that customers covered by its network have an average of 22 connected devices), their customers will need 2Gbps speeds, to continue working from home. These trends, along with what Frontier calls “long-term changes in education, healthcare and the workplace,” have led to a six-fold increase in home broadband consumption and will continue to drive demand higher, the company said.
