If 2019 is the first year of 5G commercial use, then 2020 is bound to be the year of comprehensive acceleration of 5G construction.

As a new infrastructure with a wider coverage, it is regarded as the key to hedging the current downward pressure on the economy, building a foundation for technological innovation and industrial upgrading, and supporting the modernization of the economic system.

NetEase Technology X Tsinghua Wudaokou jointly launched the “Science Lecture Hall”. In this issue, as a representative of the “new infrastructure”, how will 5G turn “crisis” into an opportunity to accelerate development?

The experts in this issue are academician and former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, director of the Expert Committee of China’s Next Generation Internet Demonstration Project, academician Wu Hequan, academic consultant of the information technology module of the Tsinghua Wudaokou Science Entrepreneur Course.

New infrastructure to accelerate 5G applications to see three major scenarios

Wu Hequan said that as early as 2018, the central government put forward the concept of new infrastructure, which mentioned the need to deploy to accelerate the pace of 5G business and strengthen the construction of new infrastructure such as artificial intelligence, industrial Internet, and the Internet of Things.

This time, in the overall promotion of epidemic prevention and control and economic development, the new infrastructure has been mentioned at a new strategic height. Wu Hequan said that the core of the new infrastructure is an intensive and efficient, economical, intelligent, green, safe and reliable modern infrastructure system.

5G is the most important component, and at the same time it also includes subdivided scenarios such as data centers, artificial intelligence, industrial Internet, Internet of Things, and information networks.

Only China chooses to take the road of 5G large-scale independent networking

Specifically, Wu Hequan explained that 1G-4G is geared towards personal communication, while 5G will be expanded to industrial Internet and smart cities. The three major application scenarios are mainly to enhance mobile broadband, ultra-reliable, low-latency, and wide-coverage large connections.

“A generation of communication technology appears in 10 years, and the peak communication rate has increased thousands of times in 10 years,” he said.

In the 5G era, different businesses can compose different needs. Using 5G’s slice management function, personalized services can be provided on demand, such as a road, ambulances can be faster, and ordinary vehicles can give way properly at that time. Academician Wu Hequan’s image allows everyone to understand the main characteristics of 5G.

In addition, he also admitted that in order to adapt to the unpredictability of the new 5G format, the corresponding intelligent services can be combined through the combination of business intelligence units to facilitate flexible invocation of network services; and the 5G mobile communication protocol is Internetized, and applications on the Internet can be directly transplanted to 5G.

“But from a security point of view, 5G takes more effort than 4G, and Internetization also increases the risk of attack.” Wu Hequan reminded.

From the perspective of route selection, Wu Hequan said that only China in the world chooses to take the road of 5G large-scale independent networking. Non-independent networking has bandwidth capabilities but lacks the 5G low latency and large connection experience that requires network support.

Independent networking has three times higher data processing efficiency than NSA, which can effectively control large-scale traffic and further optimize 5G communication services such as immersive media and unmanned vehicles. “Only China chooses to take the road of large-scale independent networking, which is more difficult but full of room for innovation.”

5G will truly revolutionize VR technology

In terms of 5G empowering the new economy, 5G can promote cloud applications, such as cloud office, cloud classroom, cloud video, cloud commerce, cloud recruitment, cloud signing, etc. during the epidemic.

Besides, Academician Wu Hequan explained the application prospects of 5G from multiple angles.

First look at the video direction that directly benefits. 5G’s high bandwidth and low latency enable real-time remote live broadcast of high-definition video. It can simultaneously transmit multi-camera camera signals to edge computing for synthesis processing to obtain a 360-degree scene experience. “There are already local companies in foreign countries that are selling different viewing angles for off-site audiences. It is expected that the global live video broadcast capacity will reach US $ 70 billion by 2021.”

In terms of VR / AR / MR, Wu Hequan explained that if the delay of the VR helmet is 7ms, there will be vertigo, 4G is 40ms, and 5G will meet the requirements of virtual reality devices in the future.

In terms of connected cars, Huawei predicts that C-V2X connected car technology will embed awards in 15% of the world’s vehicles in 2025. McKinsey estimates that connected cars will bring trillion-dollar economic scale by 2025, save 30,000 to 150,000 annually human life and reduce exhaust emissions by 90%.

Regarding the 5G tariff problem that everyone is generally concerned about, Academician Wu Hequan said that the tariff will not drop in the near future, because the operator is still in a period of large investment, and in fact in terms of unit traffic tariff, 5G is actually cheaper than 4G. But  because of the large traffic, the total tariffs are high. From the historical experience, after the number of network users increases, the traffic tariff will gradually decrease.

5G will directly drive China’s economy by 3.3 trillion yuan

5G is spawning an emerging economy. The new format of mobile communication is born after the network capabilities are available. 5G will surely produce new applications that cannot be imagined on the roof. On the economic front, according to the report of the Information Communication Institute, 5G will directly drive China’s economic GDP growth by 3.3 trillion yuan from 2020 to 2025.

Wu Hequan predicts that according to the prediction of the international HIS consulting company, the global economy will increase the market size due to 5G by 2035 to reach 13.2 trillion dollars.  The digital economy will, and will form, a three-legged support of the Industrial Internet, 5G and AI.

“5G has a very long industrial chain, and its application has a strong spillover effect, becoming the pillar of the digital economy; the new generation of information infrastructure is an important part of the new infrastructure, and 5G is the first choice.” He said and felt confident about the 5G era.
