Atlantic Broadband, the eighth largest cable operator in the United States, announced the availability of 10 Gb fiber services to its commercial Internet customers in western Pennsylvania, Rochester, New Hampshire and southern Maine. More deployments are planned this spring in the company’s Belmont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Florida service areas.

This release is a major upgrade to the Atlantic Broadband transmission network, so enterprises with strict requirements on speed and performance can now use 10 Gig speeds immediately without additional engineering requirements. Heather McCallion, Atlantic Broadband vice president of products and programming, said: “Atlantic Broadband’s investment in core networks means these markets are now ready for 10 Gig, so look for enterprise-grade speed, reliability, and dedicated Internet access (DIA) or point-to-point solutions. Enterprises of large scale can quickly install without additional network configuration work. With advanced forward-looking 10 Gig technology, we will meet the demanding data requirements of today’s enterprises, and have the ability to meet future needs as the company grows.”
10 Gig and upload speeds open new possibilities for businesses of all sizes: it allows seamless ultra high-definition (including 8K) video streaming and uploading, fast transfer of high-resolution diagnostics and medical imaging, large-scale video conferencing and super fast data backup.
It will also provide important access to cloud-based business applications and platforms. In its Global Cloud Index Report (2016-2021), Cisco states that enterprises will continue to move from dedicated on-premises servers to cloud-based applications, and by 2021, 95% of all workloads are expected to be on cloud-based platforms, secure, and high-volume data transmission is essential.
Atlantic Broadband has been a market leader in ultra-fast Internet deployments for a long time. It was the first provider in Connecticut to launch a gigabit-speed Internet in 2016 and the first to deploy the service on its Miami footprint a year later. Last year, the company provided 1 Gb Internet in 90% of the coverage in 11 states, far ahead of the pace of industry development. “We will continue to invest to give us the best network that meets the needs of our business and consumers,” McCallion said.
