According to Tom’s Hardware, the company will close two German research and development centers by the end of this year as Intel exits the 5G smartphone modem field, which will cause 450 employees to lose their jobs.

According to reports, the closure of the Nuremberg R & D center affected about 250 people, and the other in Duisburg also affected 200 people. Intel confirmed the news and said it would support the affected employees.

Intel developed modem chips and software for smartphones at these locations and contributed to Intel’s patent portfolio. Recently, Intel’s sale of the 5G smartphone modem division to Apple has just completed.

In October, Intel stated that Apple would only acquire Intel’s R & D centers in Munich, not R & D sites in Nuremberg and Duisburg. Apple originally planned to transfer the most important employees to Munich, but because of the distance, few people would accept it.
