There is new news about Apple’s self-developed 5G modem. Media reports said that they will put it into the market as fast as possible in 2022.

The three iPhone11 series released in September this year, the A13 chip is not equipped with 5G network connectivity. According to the plan, Apple will launch the 5G version in the new iPhone next year, using Qualcomm’s 5G chip.

The iPhone will be able to use Qualcomm chips again after 4 years, from the Apple and Qualcomm Century Reconciliation reached in April this year.  Both parties agreed to abandon all litigation worldwide. Apple needs to pay Qualcomm $4.5-47 billion in compensation and provide a chip supply agreement.

Due to dissatisfaction with Qualcomm’s expensive patent licensing fees, after switching to Intel chips in 2016, Apple originally planned to release a new iPhone using Intel 5G chips in 2019.  However, because of the shortcomings in the thermal design of the Intel 5G chip, Apple changed its name in December last year, and the iPhone supporting the 5G network needs to be postponed until 2020.

Intel announced the sale of its 5G mobile chip business due to its lack of support for 5G research and the risk of losing its largest customer orders after Apple Qualcomm reconciled. On July 26 this year, Apple officially issued a statement saying that it will acquire Intel’s 5G mobile phone chip business for US$1 billion. About 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple to work on the independent R&D plan of Apple’s 5G chip.

However, the outside world is also worried about whether Apple can complete the mass production of 5G chips as scheduled in 2022. After all, after the internal development work is completed, Apple needs to obtain the necessary certification from governments around the world, which is a rather time consuming process. According to foreign media reports, in 2022 Apple’s mass production is independent 5G baseband chips, and then Apple will enter the SoC integration phase, and will be integrated into the A series processors in 2023.
